obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the Philippines in 1974, graduating cum laude. He received his Bachelor of Laws from the same university in 1978, graduating cum laude and valedictorian. He placed third in the 1978 Bar Examinations. He has a Master of Laws degree from the University of Michigan and is a DeWitt fellow. He was the editor-in-chief of The Philippine Collegian and of the Philippine Law Journal in 1978. He was a Professorial Lecturer in Criminal Law at the College of Law, University of the Philippines. He was the Bar Examiner in Criminal Law in the 1986 Bar Examinations. He served as chapter director of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines from 1988 to 1989. He was Director and Executive Vice President of the U.P. Law Alumni Association from 2003 to 2004. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu international honor societies. He currently sits on the boards of several corporations including San Miguel Corporation and Alpha Aviation Group (Philippines), Inc. of which he is also President.
